Volcanoes National Park Rwanda
“The Virungas are great, old volcanoes that tower almost 15,000 feet and are nearly covered with rich, green rainforest. They are in the heart of Central Africa, at an altitude where you shiver more than sweat,” noted the renowned primatologist Dian Fossey.
Volcanoes National Park encompasses a diverse array of montane ecosystems, including evergreen and bamboo forests, open grasslands, swamps, and heaths; it is located in the far northwest of Rwanda and preserves the majestic mountain range that is home to the endangered mountain gorilla.
The sequence of dormant volcanoes that comprise the Virunga Massif—including the largest at 4,507m, Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura—is the inspiration for Volcanoes National Park. Bisoke also has a lush crater lake.
The area offers a wide variety of one-of-a-kind experiences, such as tracking endangered mountain gorillas through the mystical rain forest. You’ll also hear the sounds of 200 species of colourful birds and the chattering of the uncommon golden monkey.
Musanze Caves, which were formed 62 million years after the last estimated volcanic explosion, and Buhanga Eco-Park, an old forest containing Rwanda’s most fascinating folklore, are both located within Volcanoes National Park.
A wide variety of activities are available, including hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, and village excursions.
