A Bespoke Ultimate Safari Africa: Southern And East Africa
We have designed the ideal three-week Ultimate Safari schedule to see as much of Africa’s animals and natural attractions as possible in anticipation of our forthcoming 25th anniversary. The end result is an unforgettable journey from Cape Town to Nairobi, Kenya, via private charter flights. Along the way, you’ll stay in some of the finest hotels in Africa and enjoy activities like game drives, helicopter excursions, and marine safaris.
You will start your Ultimate Safari journey in Cape Town and spend nights at the iconic Ellerman House, a symbol of opulence, as you enjoy ocean safaris and breathtaking landscapes. You keep on to Victoria Falls, where you may take a helicopter flight over the largest sheet of falling water in the world and relax for a few days in this lively location. After you’ve had your fill of safaris in Southern Africa, your guide will lead you on a journey into Rwandan forests in search of endangered mountain gorilla families. Then, you’ll make your way to Giraffe Manor. The Masai Mara National Reserve is without a doubt the most well-known wildlife destination in East Africa. After a memorable breakfast, you will have the opportunity to learn about conservation efforts at the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. Elephants, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, hyenas, and the renowned big cats of the Mara—lions, leopards, and cheetahs—find refuge in its expansive plains.
Enjoy a traditional white-sand beach getaway at Kenya’s Diani Beach as your safari vacation draws to a close. Beach bums looking for a relaxing, “don’t make me think” getaway travel to Diani. Before spending your final two nights at the colonial-style boutique hotel Hemingways Nairobi, which harkens back to the days when its namesake writer toured East Africa, spend your days snorkelling, diving, and basking in the sun.
A Complete 12 Day Ultimate Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Cape Town! | 3 Nights
You will spend three nights at Ellerman House in Cape Town, the Mother City, before you begin your ultimate safari adventure. Elegance and magnificent comfort await you at Ellerman House, a home perched on a mountainside with views over the exclusive Bantry Bay district. The magnificent getaway is a Herbert Baker–style mansion that has been adorned with South African art lavishly.
When it comes to Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List—which features the editors’ best hotels from all over the globe—Ellerman House is a staple. Situated near Table Mountain, Clifton and Camps Bay’s powdery beaches, and just a short transport from the city centre and the famous V&A Waterfront, it is a great starting point for tours of Cape Town.
As part of your package, you will have the opportunity to go on a private ocean safari. This will allow you to sail along the stunning Cape Town coastline on a luxury catamaran while keeping an eye out for the many aquatic animals that call this area home. As an added bonus, you may take a helicopter tour of Cape Town to see the breathtaking scenery from above, where the ocean meets the mountains.
Day 4-6: Journey to Victoria Falls | 3 Nights
Your private charter flight departs from Cape Town and flies via Upington to Victoria Falls, where you will spend the following three nights at Thorntree River Lodge. The flight will take place after breakfast. The resort takes design cues from traditional Zambian architecture and furnishings to harmonise with its picturesque riverfront location. Luxurious lodgings line the riverbed, with tasteful furnishings, private plunge pools and both indoor and outdoor baths.
This lodge has a one-of-a-kind vibe because to its floating hardwood platform that extends into the river, creating a smooth transition between the natural and man-made elements. Day trips to the Livingstone Museum, scenic river cruises at dusk, surrounding towns, and the “Smoke that Thunders” Victoria Falls are also on the itinerary. As the sun goes down, you can enjoy a gin and tonic while watching hippos stomp down the river.
A picturesque helicopter ride over Victoria Falls, lasting 30 minutes, is part of your package. “Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight,” author David Livingstone remarked after visiting the Falls, thus earning the term “flight of the angels” to describe this picturesque flight.
Day 7-8: Jetsetting to the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’ | 1 Nights
Leaving from Southern Africa and heading towards East Africa, you will be privately flown to Rwanda, well known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” after breakfast. The Kigali Serena Hotel will be your home for the next two nights. One of the liveliest boulevards in the city is adjacent to this sophisticated hotel. Here, in this glittering granite atrium, you are warmly welcomed by artworks created in Rwanda.
While you’re here, you can see the Genocide Memorial and take a city tour of Kigali. After enduring its share of turmoil, Kigali has blossomed into one of the friendliest cities in Africa and the ideal jumping-off place for a safari in Rwanda. This is Rwanda at its dynamic best, from its bustling marketplaces to the city center’s shopping malls with their boutiques and cafes. With its many hills and plenty of attractions, this city will keep you busy for sure.
Day 9-11: Safari Luxury & Wild Encounters
The unparalleled location of Singita Kwitonda Lodge, on the edge of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, makes unforgettable gorilla trekking experiences a reality—a sanctuary for over a third of the world’s mountain gorillas. Private heated plunge pools, wellness treatment areas, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, and expansive timber-framed windows allowing stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the volcano are all part of the opulent suites.
The lodge’s design draws design cues from the breathtaking natural surroundings; local craftspeople hand-fired terracotta bricks and woven ceilings add visual interest, while a dedicated Conservation Room and vegetable garden provide fresh produce for Kwitonda’s farm-to-table food journey. Immerse yourself in a haven of tranquilly, peace, and warmth as you ponder interactions with the extraordinary “gentle giants of the forest.”
You will be given the extraordinary chance to accompany a researcher from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (DFGF) on a trek while you are here. In its early days, Dian Fossey’s gorilla research and habitat studies served as the foundation for what would become DFGF as a scientific organisation. As you go on your sustainable gorilla experience, the DFGF will share their extensive knowledge of the forest’s fauna, environment, and conservation efforts with you.
Day 12-13: Delightful Giraffe Encounters
Your legendary safari continues at the world-famous Giraffe Manor, where you may have the most memorable breakfast of your life. Located in 140 acres of native forest and encircled by 12 acres of private land, the Giraffe Manor is world-renowned for its resident herd of Rothschild giraffe, which ambles leisurely over the breathtaking grounds. Breakfast at Giraffe Manor is always an exciting event. What a delightful experience for the entire family! Not only can you indulge in a tantalising menu, but you might even be stopped by a curious giraffe peeking through the glass to find a snack.
In addition to spending two nights here, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and foster an elephant. The elephants who have been orphaned due to poaching in East Africa now have a place to call home. These elephants can be reintroduced to Kenya’s national parks at their own convenience with the help of compassionate people.
Day 14-17: An ‘Out of Africa’ Safari
Angama Mara, a contemporary lodge perched precariously on a clifftop with views of the Mara grasslands and the Great Rift Valley, is your home for the next four nights. There is an abundance of animals in the region, which is second only to the unparalleled view. Kenya was first recognised as one of the world’s most picturesque locations at this world-class safari lodge.
This lodge stands out from the others because of the customisable schedule they provide for wildlife drives. You get to decide when you want to go on your safari, so there’s no need to settle for a morning or late afternoon game drive. Guests of the lodge can also take part in hot air balloon safaris, guided walking safaris of the Great Rift Valley, and excursions to nearby Maasai settlements. The Mara Elephant initiative, which works to prevent the poaching of elephants, is open to visitors throughout your stay as well.
Day 18-20: Barefoot Beach Luxury
Your next stop is at Alfajiri Beach Villa on Diani Beach, widely considered to be one of Kenya’s finest, where paradise awaits. Alfajiri, widely recognised as one of the top luxury villas, is located on the beachfront and offers guests unrivalled seclusion. Embrace the spirit of liberation and let your senses be pampered in this sanctuary influenced by the warmth and generosity of Africa.
Kite surfing, deep sea fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving, and trips to Kisite Marine National Park in traditional dhow sailing vessels are all available for those who are feeling active. From land, you can explore the Shimba Hills in quest of forest elephants, ride quad bikes, or play golf at the adjacent 18-hole course. Butlers, cooks, babysitters, a driver, and a masseuse who offers daily massages are all part of the committed team. Upon your arrival, you can expect individualised service.
Day 21-22: Plantation-style Luxury in Kenya
The stunning Hemingways Nairobi, set on lush grounds in the exclusive Karen district and just 40 minutes from Nairobi International Airport, will be yours to explore after breakfast. The natural light and exquisite furnishings of this boutique hotel make it a delightful place to stay. Each of the spacious, luxurious rooms features an en suite bathroom and a balcony with views of the Ngong Hills.
An attentive, discreet butler is at your service throughout your stay to alleviate any difficulties you may have. The Brasserie serves delectable dishes with a European twist, and the bar is the perfect place to relax with a drink. Relax at the world-class spa or just soak up the tranquilly on the border of nature if you’re in the mood for some pampering.
Day 23: Farewell Kenya!
It is time to return home after your stay in East Africa. Be sure to take one final look over Africa before your trip to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport begins. Once you’re there, put your seat back and camera down.
