Tanzania And Zanzibar | Luxury Safaris And Beach Holidays

Experience the adrenaline rush of a safari, then relax on a deserted island… Any safari worth its salt will include beach time, and a combination of Tanzania and Zanzibar is sure to be a memorable experience. Joining the two places on a single vacation (they’re both in the same country) increases your chances of seeing wildlife, such as elephants in the wild one day and coral reefs teeming with fish the next.

Why combine Tanzania and Zanzibar

Your stay in Tanzania is sure to be jam-packed with exciting activities, such as early morning safaris and climbing Kilimanjaro. For that reason, I always suggest taking a break towards the conclusion of your vacation, and Zanzibar is a great spot to do just that. Staying on one of the tranquil islands in the archipelago is the perfect way to unwind, what with all the white sand beaches and warm Indian Ocean waves lapping at them.

Combining Tanzania with Zanzibar is a fantastic choice for families or couples looking to strike a balance between the island’s culture, beach life, and snorkelling with the mainland’s abundant wildlife and outdoor activities. Whether you’re looking for a tranquil retreat on Pemba or proximity to the action in Stone Town on Zanzibar, there are plenty of islands to pick from.

Getting Between Tanzania And Zanzibar

While exploring mainland Tanzania, you may want to mix flying with driving (I can set you up with a private driver-guide if you’d like). You can go to Zanzibar Island by using a standard commercial flight or a small plane, depending on your starting point. Zanzibar can be reached by plane in as little as 30 minutes from Dar es Salaam, close to Nyerere National Park, or slightly more than two hours from the Serengeti.

You can take a short flight from Zanzibar Island to Pemba or Mafia Island, or you can fly directly from Dar es Salaam to either of these islands.

Travelling barely fifteen minutes from Zanzibar Island’s northeastern coast, you’ll reach Mnemba on an open ski boat, as befits a private island.

Best time to visit Tanzania And Zanzibar

The best time to visit Tanzania and Zanzibar for a combined safari and beach holiday is during the long dry season from June to October. This period offers optimal, dry weather for spotting wildlife in Tanzania’s parks, including the Great Migration, and provides perfect, sunny conditions for lounging on Zanzibar’s beaches.

I would recommend basing your combined Tanzania and Zanzibar itinerary on your safari sights, because the island’s weather is very comparable to that of the mainland. Though you can see them as early as July, the Serengeti is at its most spectacular in September if you want to witness the Great Migration as it crosses the river. If that isn’t an issue, my favourite time is towards the end of October, when the weather is still pleasant and dry but less people are coming. November through March, known as the green season, is the best time to see wildlife if you prefer it calm. Migratory birds and newborn animals will be your reward for enduring brief rains.
