Rwanda maintains a temperate environment throughout the year, although the Virunga Volcanoes, where you will reside to see the mountain gorillas, possess a distinct microclimate. The rainforest enveloping the volcanoes experiences year-round precipitation, rendering the rainy season mostly inconsequential to your visit, as rain can occur on any day throughout the year. Nighttime temperatures are frequently cold owing to the elevation in this area.

The seasons in northern Tanzania are divided into rainy and dry periods. The primary extended dry season occurs from June to October, while the brief rains, characterized by intense precipitation typically accompanied by thunderstorms every two to three days, commence in November. From December to March, temperatures are elevated and humidity is high, accompanied by sporadic rainfall. The prolonged rainy season transpires in April and May, during which travel is discouraged due to numerous roads and airstrips becoming impassable.

Zanzibar, located at 6° south of the equator, experiences optimal holiday climate. The typical temperatures range from 24°C to 27°C year-round, accompanied by 7 to 9 hours of daily sunshine.

There are two distinct rainy seasons: Brief, intense showers lasting around one hour occur in the morning for many weeks in November. Precipitation persists marginally longer in April and May; however, it does not occur daily. The rains rejuvenate the Island and are commonly termed the “Green Season.”

A Detailed Luxury Rwanda-Tanzania-Zanzibar Itinerary

Day 1-2: Fly into Kigali

Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be greeted at the plane and shown to the VIP lounge while a team member arranges your entry documents and retrieves your bags. Enjoy an overnight stay in Kigali to rejuvenate and savour contemporary African cuisine at Heaven, one of the city’s most renowned restaurants, conveniently located within your boutique hotel.

Day 2-5: Virungas, Rwanda

Commence your safari in Rwanda, proceeding to the base of the Virunga Volcanoes, which are inhabited by mountain gorillas and served as the initial research site for Dian Fossey during her studies of these primates. Embark on a day-long trek through the deep jungle, navigating bamboo and stinging nettles to reach your designated gorilla family — the effort is undeniably rewarding. You have one valuable hour to observe the gorillas interacting, witnessing silverbacks discipline younger miscreants, or watching infants playfully ascend slender branches. A day is dedicated to observing the golden monkey, a tiny primate that resides in groups of approximately 60 individuals, providing an interesting and educational experience with your guide. Your three-night trip will provide an excellent introduction to Rwanda’s vibrant cultural heritage.

Day 5-8: Serengeti, Northern Tanzania

Departing from Rwanda, fly to Serengeti National Park in northern Tanzania and admire the expansive wildness. The vistas across the savannah appear infinite, evocative of imagery from Out of Africa, The Lion King, or several documentaries. Although it may be challenging to detach from that vista, it is imperative to do so, as some of Africa’s finest wildlife awaits discovery during exhilarating game drives with your guide. Observe the flick of a leopard’s tail in a tree, revealing its concealed location; witness a cheetah perched on a termite mound, vigilant for its next victim; or admire a troop of elephants congregating at a waterhole to hydrate. Between July and October, migratory herds of around two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles assemble, with fortunate observers perhaps witnessing a renowned river crossing.

Day 8-12: Zanzibar, Tanzania

Your last destination will be the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar. Anticipate azure waters, coral formations, and fine white sandy shores. You dictate the tempo of this segment of the journey—either completely disengaging to rejuvenate in the sunlight or occupying your days with various activities. Experience a multitude of water sports, including snorkeling, diving excursions, and traditional dhow sunset cruises, and we can suggest other excellent day trips to discover this famous spice island.
