Self Driving Around Lake Victoria

Of all the continents on Earth, Africa has been one of the most underexplored. It has long been stereotyped as a land of scantily clad women on Savannah flights, especially among Europeans.

A great debt of gratitude is due to global conferences like Ted-talks, which have done much to educate the world about Africa and its rich diversity.

Savannah planes, tropical climates, snow, and wildlife are the four main features that define Africa. The aforementioned activities are available in most African places, with the exception of the African deserts, while water trips are popular in Madagascar and other popular sites in Africa.

Africa is also home to a plethora of freshwater lakes; as an interesting fact, Lake Victoria is both the largest freshwater lake in Africa and the world’s second-largest. Being the largest freshwater lake in Africa, what does this mean for Lake Victoria?

Lake Victoria Circuit

Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya—in that order of size—are the three East African countries that share Lake Victoria. Accordingly, you’ll need to traverse no less than three borders in order to see Lake Victoria to its fullest.

Rwanda

Rwanda should be the starting point of the best Lake Victoria circuit. Despite the fact that Rwanda does not receive any water from Lake Victoria, it is a great jumping off point for a Lake Victoria circuit because it shares borders with Tanzania and Uganda.

Our standard recommendation is that you spend a minimum of two nights in Rwanda before making the journey to Tanzania.

Among the many activities to do in Rwanda, you should not miss the city tour of Kigali, the genocide museums and markets, the boat excursion on Lake Ihema, and the wildlife drives in Akagera National Park.

Tanzania

It is possible to cross into Tanzania on the third day after spending two days in Rwanda. A visit to Mwanza and a stop at Lake Victoria follow. Among the many must-see attractions in Tanzania are the following: Several national parks, including Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Arusha, and Kilimanjaro. And while you’re there, make sure to relax on one of the many stunning beaches in the Mwanza region.

Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks should definitely be on your itinerary, depending on your interests, budget, and availability.

Before heading to Kenya, you should spend at least a week in Tanzania seeing the northern regions. For those who are captivated by the avian world, a trip to Tanzania’s Lake Victoria is an experience not to be missed.

Kenya

Among East African safari hotspots, Kenya is well-known for its abundant wildlife, particularly in the Masai Maara game reserve. If you’re planning a road trip across Kenya, these are some stops you might make:

Various wildlife reserves near Nakuru, a city trip of Nairobi, and Masai Mara. If you want to get to Uganda as fast as possible, this is the way to go.

Uganda

Because of its unparalleled verdant landscape, Uganda is frequently the most talked-about stop on the Lake Victoria circuit. No other East African country can compare.

In a ten-day timeframe, you could visit the following sites: Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa (which should be your initial stop after Kenya), Jinja town (home to the Nile’s source and rafting among other things), Entebbe (for more views of Lake Victoria), and finally, parks in western Uganda, like Kibale (where you can go monkey trekking), Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (where you can go gorilla trekking).

Given the abundance of game drives in Tanzania and Kenya, I would suggest limiting your game drives in Uganda to one or two parks. These should be Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Kidepo Valley, or Lake Bunyonyi. After enjoying a relaxing game drive, you can continue on to Kigali, Rwanda, for your flight.
