The Republic of the Congo, often called ‘the Congo’ is situated in Central-Western Africa and along the Equator.

Almost sixty years ago, in 1960, the Congo became an independent nation. Its fascinating history begins with its Pygmy inhabitants around 1500 BCE and continues into the present day. The powerful Congo River—the world’s second-largest river and an important commercial route—is usually associated with noteworthy dates that occur between these times.
Among the initial groups to forge trade connections into the river basin were three Bantu kingdoms, and in 1484, the Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão reached the mouth of the river. In 1880, the French colonial era began, and with it came the building of a train that would connect the Atlantic port of Pointe-Noire to Brazzaville, the capital city, and thereby avoid the rapids of the Congo River.
