Day 2: Depart for Fort Portal – Kibale National Park

This morning, you will leave for Fort Portal and investigate the vicinity of the Rwenzori Mountains, with an optional visit to the renowned Rwenzori Mountain Sculpture Foundation.

Subsequently, you will proceed to Kibale Forest National Park in Western Uganda, a remarkably diverse forest that hosts over 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, the rare L’Hoest monkey, blue monkeys, grey mangabeys, black-faced vervet monkeys, baboons, pottos, and bushbabies, along with a variety of forest bird species.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Tracking in the Jungle (Kibale National Park)

Following breakfast, we will convene at the Ranger Headquarters in Kibale Forest National Park at 8 AM to commence our search for the resident chimpanzees. Observing these lively primates engage in play and frolic among the fruit trees is quite enjoyable.

The seasoned ranger will acquaint you with the diverse members of the chimpanzee family and reveal numerous other forest creatures. While traversing the forest along narrow paths, you will get knowledge regarding the local use of woodland flora to address various ailments, among other applications.

The mysterious forest elephant, smaller and more fur-covered than its savannah counterpart, inhabits the Kibale Forest. Occasionally, sizable creatures including buffalo, big wild boars, and several antelope species may be observed.

In the afternoon, you will tour the adjacent Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. Ingeniously designed pathways direct you through the towering papyrus overhead. This region features over 130 bird species, vibrant butterflies, eight primate species, and the unique semi-aquatic Sitatunga antelope, exemplifying ethical tourism.

Day 4: Depart for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is among the most biologically and botanically diverse locations globally. This forest, located in the south-western region at the boundary of the western Rift Valley, has an area of 331 km². The treasures of Bwindi consist of approximately 400 natural Mountain gorillas. They comprise around fifty percent of the global population of these delicate hominids.

You will reach Buhoma in the afternoon, where the expedition persists. If you are inclined, consider taking a walk around the vicinity—there is much to discover. You may discover something unique in one of the local art and crafts stores.

Day 5: Gorillas in Bwindi

Upon locating the gorilla family, you will be instructed to abandon all personal possessions and cautiously approach these gentle giants with only your camera in hand. The guide elucidates the animals’ behaviour for you. Females, their offspring, immature males, and the dominant silverback can be observed feeding, playing, interacting, or simply resting. This encounter with the gorillas will remain unforgettable. Be assured, they will be equally eager to see you as you are to see them. You have precisely one hour with the gorillas before returning to the base station.

Following the exhilarating interaction with the gorillas, you will return to the village. In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to observe the Batwa, the indigenous inhabitants of the forest.
