A 9-Day Tanzania Conservation Safari | The Northern Circuit
Nyerere National Park and Ruaha National Park are two of the biggest and most unspoiled reserves in Tanzania that you will explore on this luxury 9-day Tanzania conservation safari. Here you may experience the wildest side of Africa as you are whisked away by charter plane to each safari lodge for an extended safari.
Roho ya Selous is a boutique camp in Nyerere National Park where you may start your African journey with activities including walking safaris, wildlife drives, boat safaris, catch-and-release fishing, and giraffe strolling past your bed. Spread out along a thicket, these roomy canvas tents are ideal for a safari experience.
Usangu Expeditions Camp, a true jewel in Tanzania, is up next. Located within Tanzania’s biggest protected area, The Ruaha National Park, this immersive seasonal camp is open from June to November every year and is set in the Usangu Wetlands floodplains. At Jabali Ridge, your safari adventure comes to a close, but not before you’ve had your fill of wildlife drives, walking safaris, and night drives. After an unforgettable day in the bush, unwind in style with a visit to the spa, an amazing lounge, and an infinity pool.
A Detailed 9-Day Tanzania Conservation Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Tanzania! | 1 Nights
The Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel, a haven of opulence in the middle of the bustling metropolis, is the ideal place to begin your East African adventure. In this tropical garden setting, you may unwind with a refreshing drink on the patio by the pool while basking in the shade of a parasol. Enjoy a comfortable and roomy stay for your first night on safari. The hotel is perfectly situated to connect you to the rest of your conservation experience, where you will be actively involved.
Day 2-3: Journey into the ‘Heart of the Nyerere’ | 2 Nights
Arrive at Julius Nyerere International after breakfast to board the charter flight to Mtemere airfield, where you will have a five-star stay at Roho ya Selous. Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous, is the biggest reserve in Africa, and this tented camp is located within it.
Located in a marshy area with palm trees, lakes, and rivers, Roho ya Selous is home to elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, and hippos; it is open only from June to mid-March annually, and it is very different from the grassy plains of northern Tanzania. It is also the site of one of the largest concentrations of wild dogs in all of Europe. Although there is a good chance of seeing wildlife, this part of the Serengeti is far less popular with safari goers, so you’ll have the impression that you’re in your own little Africa.
While in Roho ya Selous, you can go on wildlife drives, walking safaris, and boat safaris, during which you can see hippos wading in the shallows and crocodiles sunbathing on sandbanks.
Day 4-6: Hands-On Conservation Safari Experiences | 3 Nights
The days are passing, and soon you will be moving to a more remote area of Ruaha National Park to put up your next tented camp. For your stay at Usangu Expeditions Camp, you will be charter flown to the Jongomero airstrip. This camp provides an unforgettable safari setting between the trees, right on the banks of the Usangu Wetlands.
The nearby Douglas Bell Eco Research Station is what distinguishes Usangu. Join up on research initiatives here to learn more about the important work happening on one of Africa’s remaining frontiers. Depending on the researchers present at any particular moment, the experiences that are offered may differ slightly. You have the opportunity to take part in research projects including as setting up camera traps, analysing images to identify predators, and utilising telemetry to follow collared lions and other animals. You’ll feel more connected to the conservation and preservation of this country and its wild inhabitants on this hands-on safari.
Walking safaris across expansive grasslands, stargazing under an endless canopy of stars, and canoeing and boating adventures through the Usangu Wetland’s waterways are all available at the camp.
Day 7-8: Safari Luxury & Wild Encounters | 2 Nights
Jabali Ridge is where your safari adventure will come to a close. The Mwagusi River and the Ikuka escarpment may be seen from this posh camp’s perch on a rocky outcrop. Lions, elephants, buffalo, and endangered wild dogs are just some of the animals that call Ruaha’s sun-drenched plains, towering baobabs, and tough bushes home. Beautifully crafted to disappear into its natural surroundings, Jabali Ridge is an impressive architectural feat.
Relax in the infinity pool, get a hot-stone massage in the spa, and go on game drives to see lions. Another once-in-a-lifetime chance is to go on a night drive, when you’re more likely to see predators and nocturnal, elusive species. You can increase your chances of spotting hunting African wild cats, honey badgers, servals, genets, and leopards with the help of an experienced guide.
Your safari experience will conclude with a return flight to Julius Nyerere International Airport following a sumptuous meal. For a perfect tropical island ending, speak with one of our Africa Safari Experts about adding a few nights to Zanzibar.
Day 9: Farewell Africa!
Your Tanzanian adventure will come to a close after your last breakfast in Ruaha National Park, and you will go on with your travel plans to return home.
