Day 2: Gorilla Tracking and Conservation Experience

After an enjoyable local breakfast, proceed to the park headquarters, situated approximately 100 meters from your accommodation. You will receive a briefing from a park ranger. The gorilla trekking expedition commences at 8:30 am. In the Buhoma woodland region, three habituated gorilla groups exist: Habinyanja (Group H), Mubare (Group M), and Rushegura (Group R).

Gorilla trekking is an extraordinary expedition, valued by the privileged individuals who partake in it. The expedition may go from 3 hours to an entire day of traversing the verdant woodland. Skilled trackers, well-acquainted with the jungle, lead your journey. Gorillas engage in everyday foraging activities, and your visit provides insight into their familial dynamics. Should you be fortunate enough to make eye contact with a gorilla, you may experience an instant bond.

The esteemed gorilla researcher Dian Fossey stated, “Their individuality, coupled with their shy behaviour, left the most captivating impression during my initial encounter with the greatest of the great apes.” Following this remarkable event, return to the lodge to unwind, exchange narratives, and examine your images. In the evening, contemplate a canoe excursion with locals at Lake Bunyonyi to witness further animals.

You will collaborate with Nature Uganda and the Wetlands Management Department (WMD) to assist the Masaka Youth Development Organisation. This community-oriented organisation empowers communities and educational institutions via programs focused on sustainable development. The initiative promotes the active involvement of wetland-edge communities in the management and conservation of the Nabajjuzi wetland.

The project encompasses eco-tourism development, aquaculture, afforestation, and riparian gardening. You will also participate in tree planting initiatives to support wetland and environmental conservation. Return to your lodge for repose, amusement, and an overnight accommodation.
