Days 2 – 4: From Kigali to the Virunga Volcanoes | 3 Nights

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

After a leisurely breakfast, you’ll board a vehicle for the three-hour drive to the Volcanoes Virunga Lodge at the base of the towering Virunga Volcanoes. Visit the grave of legendary gorilla conservationist Dian Fossey or just relax in the gardens and take in the breathtaking views of the volcano, lake, and forest.

On day two, you’ll take a ride to Kinigi, where you can spend the day hiking in Volcanoes National Park in search of endangered mountain gorillas. About 300 of these critically endangered monkeys call this area home, and the family groupings you’ll be following are used to humans. Traveling north through the thick jungle and ascending to the base of the Virunga Volcanoes, where the groups are located, can be difficult work in the wet, muddy, and humid circumstances. However, once you’ve located them, you’ll be treated to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these lovely creatures as they engage in normal activities like socializing, feeding, and grooming.

The lodge offers a variety of optional activities, such as guided excursions through the park and hikes to the peak of the volcano, where you may spend the day hunting for golden monkeys and other colorful rainforest dwellers. Safaris for birdwatchers of all skill levels are available, as are trips to museums and traditional villages. There are many places to sit back and take in the breathtaking vistas, and in the evenings, there is live music and other entertainment to enjoy by the campfire.

Day 5: Farewell to the Virungas
