Before continuing on to Jinja, we will stop at Sezibwa Falls to immerse ourselves in the local culture. The route to Jinja passes through a tropical rain forest, numerous homesteads, and picturesque tea and sugarcane farms.
Once you get to Jinja, there’s a boat ride to the Nile River’s headwaters on Lake Victoria. On the way, a young, energetic guide will fill you in on the history of the Nile and its voyage to Egypt. Afterwards, we will be transferred to Sipi for the night.

Day 3 &4: Cultural experiences on the slopes of Mt Elgon
Our time here will be devoted to studying the Sabiny language and customs and interacting with locals. Our first stop is at the Sipi Widows community near Mount Elgon. The best washed Arabica coffee starts here. Join the Sipi Widows’ Group as they show you every step of growing coffee: from planting seeds to harvesting, grinding, storing, and washing.
There will be a visit to a women’s crafts shop, a lesson on the Sabiny (traditional weaving), and an exploration of African cuisine (preparation, cooking, and tasting of local meals). Profits from the shop and tour go towards school expenses, protecting the coffee trees and spreading the word about the risks of female circumcision, a practice that is still common in this area.
Additionally, we will walk to the Sipi Falls to admire these stunning natural features.
Day 5: Hike to Piswa Camp
Your ascent of Mount Elgon will begin at Kapkwata, located at an elevation of 2190 meters, which you will reach after breakfast. At an elevation of 2850 meters, you’ll reach the Piswa Camp after a picturesque journey through heath, moorland, and bamboo. As you make your way up to Piswa camp, take in the varied landscapes of greenery; today’s climb won’t be too strenuous.
Day 6: Hunters Cave Camp in Mt Elgon
Ascend to the caldera rim by foot, passing towering columns of endemic and uncommon plant species including Lobelia Elgonensis. On this picturesque journey through Uganda’s unique alpine scenery, keep an eye out for the stunning wild everlasting flowers. You can stop at the hot springs that are along this road. You can reach Suam Gorge, which offers breathtaking mountain views, along the same trail. At an elevation of 3,850 meters, Hunters Cave Camp is the final destination after the gorge.
Day 7: Overnight at Mude Cave Camp
Our objective for the day is to reach the 4,321-meter peak of Wagagai, which sits atop the caldera. Climbing the peak is worthwhile for the breathtaking views from the caldera. The next day, we’ll head down from the Jackson peak (4200 meters) and the Jackson pool to Mude Cave Camp (3500 meters), where we’ll spend the night. As the fourth-highest mountain in Africa, Mount Elgon boasts the biggest caldera on the planet.
Day 8: Descend through the Sasa Trail
You will start your descent to Budadiri today after an early breakfast on the Sasa path. We opted for an alternative path so that you could see more of the mountain from a different angle. Our driver/guide will pick you up in Budadiri and take you back to Kampala via Mbale, where you can have lunch en route.
Day 9: End of Mount Elgon Hike
You will be transferred to the airport to begin your journey back home after a pleasant night of reminiscing about your walk to the second highest mountain in Uganda. We hope you’ll consider making plans to visit the Pearl of Africa again after your exploration of this region of Uganda.
