Mount Elgon National Park Uganda

Mount Elgon National Park, located on the Uganda-Kenya border, features the world’s largest extinct volcano caldera (8km across) and the oldest solitary volcanic mountain in East Africa. Gazetted in 1992, this 1,110 km2 park is renowned for hiking to the 4,321m Wagagai Peak, massive caves (Kitum, Tutum), waterfalls, and rich biodiversity, including over 300 bird species.

  • Hiking/Trekking: The primary activity is hiking, with the full trekking circuit taking 4–5 days to reach the caldera and peaks. Shorter day hikes are available, particularly around the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre.
  • Sipi Falls: Located outside the park boundary, these iconic waterfalls are a popular starting point or side trip, offering hiking, abseiling, and coffee tours.

  • Coffee tour; Uganda’s finest coffee is produced from Arabica beans grown on Mount Elgon. Take a guided tour of a coffee garden to see how the beans are grown and ground.

Towering about 4,222meters above sea level, covered in mist and drizzle Mt. Elgon is a soaring volcanic giant that is a sight to behold! The lush montane forest is thick and evergreen on the floor, but as you hike up, the foliage changes and the best place to see the forest is on the Chelulus circuit of the park. Mixed bamboo and Podocapus is the next forest zone which is a common feature on the mountain. The heath zone is characterized by dense scrub and wildflowers. The alpine moorland zone boasts of the highest number of endemic plant species on the mountain while the open moorland grassland is dotted with clusters of giant groundsel and lobelia plants that are unique to East Africa.
