Zambia Photographic Safaris Packages
- Adapted game-drive vehicles that come with tailored camera mounts. Some of them may even have removable chairs to make additional space for photographers, and some of them may even have seats that spin around.
- Everybody gets a window seat and there are bean bags and dust coverings.
- A tour guide who is also skilled in photography or who is familiar with where to place the vehicle to capture the most flattering angles and best light.
- Game drives that are both private and flexible. The goal of most photographers is to get an early start and spend more time at each sighting than the average tourist. If you would like not to be “hurried,” hiring a private car can be worth the additional cost. Hours can be spent immersed in your subject in this manner.
- A vantage point from which to survey the Luangwa River or a nearby waterhole.
- Refreshments, cushioned seats, and other comfort features are now standard in many ships. In South Luangwa National Park, you’ll find the one up there; it’s ideal for capturing images of the carmine bee-eaters that set up nests along the riverbank.
- Some lodges may even have “studios” where guests can get their digital images printed. Any electrical devices you want to bring should be tested to ensure they are compatible with the camp’s or lodge’s power source. The generators used by remote bush camps typically only run during certain hours of the day, so it’s important to pack plenty of fully charged batteries as a backup.
Being aware of the seasonality and migration patterns of animals could be useful if you are pursuing a particular topic. A very basic outline is this:
- During Green Season, which typically runs from November to April, both migratory and resident birds reach their peak. Keep in mind that some campgrounds and resorts may still be closed during this time when making plans.
- The Green Season is a great time for plains game to give birth because there is a plenty of food and water. Big cats regularly come in to prey on defenceless pups, so if you’re looking for predator action, now is a great time to go. It could be difficult to get a clear shot among the taller and thicker vegetation.
- Because the wildlife “pops” against the verdant green during Green Season, it is also great for landscapes. Photographing rainbows, cloudscapes, and storms is also a thrilling experience. Now that the rain is washing away the dust, the air is the crispest it has ever been.
- Wildlife is most visible during the dry season (about July to October) due to the scarcity of water and the fact that animals do not venture too far from their water sources. Also, with the greenery thinning away, getting a good shot is much easier. In the presence of larger animals, such as elephants and buffalo, even the slightest amount of dust can evoke unsettling visions.
- It is also an excellent time for predator action in the late dry season. As the month of October approaches and the temperature rises, many plains game grow less robust and more frightened, leaving the last surviving waterholes vulnerable to ambushes by cats and canids.
- You might have to share sightings during the dry season, but during Green Season there are fewer other vehicles and fewer crowds.
PLEASE NOTE:
Children and villagers are not considered animals. You should always get their permission before taking pictures of their homes, businesses, or children. Think about how you would feel if an unknown person showed up at your house and began photographing your children or family. Because dental care is so scarce, it is considered exceedingly inappropriate to provide children candies or sweets in exchange for sitting for a photo. Once again, put yourself in the shoes of the stranger who offered your child treats in exchange for a photo.
Enquire with your guide for assistance if you wish to capture intimate moments through photography. Show your subjects the finished products while remaining sympathetic, welcoming and appreciative. If they say no, politely accept.
