7-Day South Luangwa Walking Safari | Wilderness Experience
The Kabira Safaris Mobile Walking Safaris have long been known as the best wilderness experience of the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. Join us on this 7 or 9 night adventure of a lifetime!
The South Luangwa National Park’s finest wilderness experience has been the Mobile Walking Safaris offered by Kabira Safaris since 1990. These walking safaris were a first for Africa. They are still completely one-of-a-kind. Stepping out of the game drive vehicle and into the bush, where adventure awaits, donning a sturdy pair of walking boots. The group spends the night at Nkwali Camp before making the trip north of the park. For the next five days, they will trek along the Mupamadzi River, covering about 10 kilometres per day. To round off the safari, spend one more night at either Nsefu Camp or Tena Tena Camp.
One of the last remaining unspoiled wilderness places and perhaps the best wildlife sanctuary in Africa is South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, which marks the end of the Great Rift Valley. Many people know that the walking safari takes place in South Luangwa National Park. In all of Africa, this is among the most private safaris you can book. The Luangwa River forms the park’s focal point. The park’s natural flooding patterns, which are unaffected by human intervention, render a significant portion of the park inaccessible by road, providing a haven for the abundant wildlife that inhabits the area. The park is a birdwatcher’s dream, home to more than 450 different species of birds as well as elephants, buffalo, hippos, giraffes, leopards, and lions.
Remote and wild, with different ecosystems and terrain, and game that is wary of and unaccustomed to humans is the location where our mobile walking safaris take place. You will discover the various aspects of the bush, from ants to buffalo, a bird’s nest to pursuing a lion. A highly trained guide will lead each walk, and an armed game scout will be by your side the whole route, ensuring your complete protection.
A Detailed 7-Day South Luangwa Walking Safari
Day 1: Nkwali Camp
The Luangwa River is clearly visible from Nkwali Camp. Nkwali is the perfect place to begin your safari because it is on private property owned by Kabira Safaris and it overlooks the South Luangwa National Park. With a few more modern conveniences than the bush camps, this charming little camp is the perfect place to begin your safari and immerse yourself in African culture.
At Nkwali Camp, you can choose between a walking safari and a game drive for two daily wildlife activities. Every day on safari is different; you’re free to do what you want, when you want, but we do suggest doing something. In addition to the gaming, there are culturally enriching activities like visiting a local school and hamlet to get a feel for real Zambian life. We also recommend visiting one of the animal education centers.
Day 2-6:
The South Luangwa National Park’s finest wilderness experience has been the Mobile Walking Safaris offered by Kabira Safaris since 2021.
Day 7: Tena Tena Camp
At the end of your Mobile Walking Safari, you will reach Tena Tena Camp. Located in the restricted Nsefu Sector of the National Park, this secluded camp boasts a breathtaking setting on a winding bend of the Luangwa River. The enormous, tailor-made tents are shaded by a park of mahogany trees. Guests can enjoy riverside views of elephants, hippos and antelope from the thatched bar and eating area.
Since Kabira Safaris was Robin’s initial camp and a perennial favourite among safari enthusiasts, the name Tena Tena has come to represent the entire operation. While the general structure of the game is comparable to Luangwa River Camp, keep in mind that you’re in an entirely new area with plenty of sights to explore. You may get a closer look at animals including hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds from the hippo hide, which is accessible at certain times of the year.
