Serengeti Walking Safari Tanzania | Expert Guide & Safety

A Serengeti walking safari offers an immersive way to experience the Tanzanian bush on foot. Led by specialist guides and armed park rangers, these excursions range from short 2-3 hour nature walks (from $90-$150) to multi-day, mobile camping expeditions. The minimum age requirement for walkers is typically 16.

A Safari adventure in the Serengeti is an altogether different walk. You are in direct contact with the ground, the grasses, the birds, the mammals. To be very serene and distant and to follow in the footsteps of our forefathers is an honour.

Types of Serengeti Walking Safaris

Short Nature Walks: Usually 2.5 to 3 hours long. They cover about 9 to 15 km and are ideal for spotting smaller wildlife, insects, tracks, and local flora just outside the main national park boundaries.

Mobile Fly Camping: A multi-day trek where you walk 8 to 10 miles each morning. While you carry only a day pack, your crew packs up the camp and sets it up in a new, remote location ahead of your arrival by lunchtime.

Semi-Permanent Base Camps: You stay in one highly comfortable tented camp for the duration of the trip, departing on foot in different directions each day to explore the immediate ecosystem.

What to Expect

Daily Routine: Days typically begin early at 6:30 AM to beat the heat, returning to camp before midday temperatures rise. Afternoons are spent relaxing in shaded lounge areas, followed by a shorter sunset walk.

Wildlife Viewing: Walking safaris focus heavily on the finer details of the bush—paw prints, ancient stone tools, and birdlife—though you will also encounter larger resident game (giraffes, zebras, elephants).

Safety: You are always accompanied by an armed National Park ranger and a highly trained professional walking guide.

Serengeti Walking Safari itinerary

Generally you will start the day with a light breakfast so you are walking by 6.30am. Our camp cook will make a packed ‘second breakfast’ to eat out in the bush. Your guide will do his best to get you back to camp before it gets too hot for a leisurely lunch. You’ll be spending your afternoons like the animals, in a shaded place with your eyes shut. As the day cools you will be taken on shorter treks to experience the African sunset.

Itineraries will change season by season. The beauty of our Walking Camps is that they follow the Migration, but this does not imply the destinations change too often. Trips can be as long or short as you choose and pricing varies with the season. Depending on your arrangements, you can alternatively fly or drive into camp. We provide a range of packages to suit your needs from 2 day Walking Safaris to full week.

Are Walking Safaris safe?

Yes, but only with trained Walking Guides. We were one of the first operators to start Walking safaris in the Serengeti around 5 years ago At Kabira Safaris Africa we pride ourselves on our outstanding Guide Training and hence it is a natural part of our training cycle to want to be a Walking Guide.

Guides only become Walking Guides after passing frequent tests in both the nature and topography of the area but also intensive instruction on guns. Our Guides are constantly checked and evaluated to provide a high level of safety.

Our Safaris are also run with a National Park Ranger who along with our Guide also carries a handgun for protection.

The truth is that animals often avoids the man on foot. A wariness of people is innate from historical history of hunting by local cultural groups stretching back millions of years and then the commercial poaching that ate the area in the early 1900’s. This allows us to take you on Walking Safaris securely and soak up the splendour of the Serengeti with both sides keeping a respectful distance.
