An EPIC 4 Day Rwenzori Waterfalls Circuit Hike
The Rwenzori Mountains are home to many stunning waterfalls, including Sebwe, Kororo, Kithangetsa, the twin Rwatha and Nyamughasana falls, and others like Kamalha, Cathy’s, Nyamwamba, Plozza, and Engwe falls, accessible via trekking routes such as the 4-day Waterfall Circuit Trek. These waterfalls, found within Rwenzori Mountains National Park, offer breathtaking scenery with cascading waters, lush vegetation, and unique alpine flora, providing memorable experiences for hikers who often navigate through forests and ravines.
A new route pioneered while the mountains were quiet during the pandemic, this 4-day hike takes you to some of the most beautiful areas of the Rwenzoris, including over 8 stunning waterfalls.
A Complete 4 Day Rwenzori Waterfalls Circuit Hike
Day 1: Hike to Sine Camp
Commence the experience with a briefing alongside your guides at Kilembe (1,450m), prior to embarking on the walk to Sine Camp at 2,596 metres. You will go across the Afro-montane woodland zone. This is a gradual ascent for around 6 kilometres before traversing a steep segment leading to Sine Camp.
The walk is an excellent opportunity to observe the vegetation and fauna of the Rwenzoris, including Colobus monkeys. Today, you will traverse an estimated distance of 9.5 km for a duration of 5 to 6 hours.
Located within 200 meters from the camp are the picturesque Enock Falls, which you may explore prior to dinner.
Day 2: Sine Camp to Samalira Camp
Ascend through the Bamboo zone to Kalalaama camp at an elevation of 3,134 meters. Following a little respite, proceed through a dense woodland adorned with draping mosses until arriving at a lobelia garden. Descend down a moss-covered ridge to Samalira camp at an elevation of 3,174 meters. The walk today spans roughly 4 kilometres and lasts 5 to 6 hours, across rugged terrain.
While travelling to Samalira, you will encounter a succession of waterfalls, the most remarkable being the Samalira Falls.
Day 3: Samalira Camp to Forest View Camp
Ascend to Kamalha Falls before proceeding upward and veering right beneath Cathy’s Falls. You have the opportunity to ascend to view Cathy’s Falls. Descend to Nyamwamba Falls and Plozza Falls, where we will pause for a picnic lunch.
Proceed to Engwe Falls and subsequently to Forest View Camp at an elevation of 2,580 meters after lunch. The vistas from this campsite are breathtaking.
Day 4: Return to Kilembe
Following a substantial breakfast, descend the slopes, traversing the moss-covered rocks, forests, and rivers back to the base camp at Kilembe. Conduct a debrief and on with your adventure.
