Volcanoes National Park is a stunning region full of possibilities. Gorilla’s Nest, like an actual gorilla’s den, is hidden under tall eucalyptus trees, giving visitors the impression that they are in for an endless adventure. The resort is more than just a pretty face; it also has a state-of-the-art fitness center and a meditation terrace where guests can feel at one with nature while working up a sweat. The shimmering infinity pool overlooking the gardens and the treatments inspired by the ancient tribal medicines of Terres D’Afrique are staples at every One & Only property’s hallmark world-class spa and Club One.

Our favourite rooms

The multi-level Silverback Suites are the ultimate retreat for your great-ape getaway: they have private pools, a dining terrace for barbecues and views out across the volcanic landscape, all with a birdsong soundtrack and an eau de eucalyptus scent.

Poolside

After a long day of hiking, you may cool off in the outdoor pool any time.

Spa

The hotel uses its own locally grown roses and coffee in its spa treatments. After your mountain gorilla climb, relax with a three-day wellness program that includes a coffee and coconut scrub to remove toxins and a deep muscular massage. The Sleep Nest Ritual is a 90-minute treatment that combines acupressure, aromatherapy, chimes, and rain sticks to help you relax and go asleep after the excitement of your great ape expedition.

Packing tips

Wear camouflage, neutral linens, and environmentalist gear in general; binoculars are a plus.

Children

Visitors of any age are permitted in the national park, however the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15. However, activities such as nature walks, archery, and cycling are great for kids of all ages at the Jack Hanna Cottage.

Sustainability efforts

Produce comes from the chef’s garden or local growers, food scraps are sent to a local pig farm owned by a woman, single-use plastics are banned, and all turndown gifts are made by local craftsmen. The resort also collaborates with Handspun Hope, a group that helps HIV/AIDS patients and vulnerable female survivors of the 1994 Genocide.
