Hiking up Rwanda’s Virunga Volcanoes is the first stop on your honeymoon in East Africa. Along the way, you’ll get to see some of the world’s last mountain gorilla families. Walking distances range from two to eight hours, so you can pick a walk that suits your needs and interests.

The next exciting step is to board a small plane and soar over Kenya’s Masai Mara, where you may observe animals up close. Once you’re on the ground, you’ll be lucky enough to see the Great Migration (seasonal) and the Big Five (leopard, lion, buffalo, rhino, and elephant) in Africa.

Zanzibar is the perfect place to finish your honeymoon. While there, you may explore Stone Town for cultural tours, go island hopping in the Indian Ocean, swim with whale sharks (seasonal availability), or just rest on the white sands while the turquoise waves crash on the shore.

Your local guide will be waiting for you at Kigali International Airport, and the two of you will then take a scenic journey through rural Rwanda to Kinigi, nestled in the foothills of the Virungas in Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans). The journey usually takes around 2.5 hours. Once you reach your lodge, you can relax and enjoy the afternoon at your own pace. Get some sleep tonight before your gorilla trekking expedition tomorrow.

Day 2 – Gorilla Trekking

You will be escorted by your guide to the park offices to complete the required paperwork after breakfast. After that, you’ll have a meeting with your ranger guides to go over the upcoming walk and what to expect from the experience. After that, we’ll take you to the trailhead, where your hike will officially begin.

Based on your personal preferences and fitness level, you have the option to choose between multiple treks that gorilla families. The duration of your walk is entirely up to you, ranging from two to eight hours. Then, while staying in radio contact with the group’s trackers, your guide will lead you down mostly open pathways into the jungle. Despite the leisurely pace, the walk can be exhausting and has some steep sections due to the height of nearly 2,500 meters.

Each family of mountain gorillas can only be visited by one group of tourists every day, and even then, you’ll only get an hour to spend with them. Photographing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience for any serious photographer. When shooting in the jungle, keep in mind that lighting conditions can be challenging and that flash is strictly forbidden. In the event that it is likely to rain heavily, you should shield your camera from the elements.

Following your one-hour gorilla encounter, you will return to your resort for lunch and have the remainder of the day to yourself.
