Gorilla Trekking From India to Rwanda/Uganda

Get ready for an adventure of a lifetime with our all-inclusive guide to trekking gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda. In the verdant East African woodlands, you can find these amazing primates in their native habitat, where you can learn more about their fascinating lives.

Trekking with gorillas is, second only to seeing the BIG 5 on safari, the most famous adventure in Africa. Hiking through East African dense tropical rainforests in search of the world’s most endangered apes is an unforgettable experience that few get to have the chance to witness up close and personal. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of WWF and local governments, the mountain gorilla population is showing signs of recovery. This is partly financed by the sale of gorilla trekking permits, which contributes to conservation efforts in Rwanda, Congo, and Uganda.

The gorilla population has been in steady decline due to human interference, poaching, sickness, and territorial disputes amongst gorillas. Many of the dangers faced by gorillas have diminished as a result of habituation programs and tourist preparations, as these primates are closely watched in their natural habitats around the clock.

These days, gorilla trips in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Congo are expertly run to ensure the survival of the species.

Trekking with gorillas is an experience that many tourists consider essential. In order to make the most of your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, you need arm yourself with knowledge about gorilla tours in Africa. We have compiled this guide to help you do just that.

What is gorilla trekking

As part of a one-of-a-kind primate adventure, gorilla trekking entails tourists actively seeking out habituated gorilla families. Trekking with gorillas is a unique kind of African safari that entails walking through dense tropical forest regions in Rwanda, Uganda, and the D.R. Congo, where gorillas are located.

Licensed park rangers from the Rwanda Development Board and the Uganda Wildlife Authority, respectively, lead the hike. Researchers have been habituating certain groups of gorillas in order to fully habituate the families, thus you can only trek habituated gorilla families or semi-habituated gorilla groups for an hour each day. It often takes two years for them to adjust to human presence in this way.

In all of the gorilla safari parks, visitors spend an hour in the company of mountain gorillas while park rangers keep an eye on them and give instructions on how to behave. For those planning a safari to Rwanda, gorilla tracking is best done at Volcanoes National Park; in the Congo, at Virunga National Park; and in Uganda, at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to Kahuzi-Biega National Park, where visitors can go on unforgettable treks with Eastern lowland gorillas.

How difficult is trekking gorillas

Trekking comfortably in the rainforest and enjoying the journey without pressure requires a certain degree of fitness. This primate experience takes place in montane forest regions, which are known for their steep slopes and, if you visit during the rainy season, for potentially muddy and hazardous paths. Get in the habit of going on lengthy walks at least a few months before you go out on your once in a lifetime vacation.

For visitors who are unable to journey long distances because to physical limitations, illness, age, or disability, gorilla parks provide easy-nearby groups. During the briefing, the guides will assign you to groups of eight and describe the process of gorilla trekking. Find the finest hiking club for your abilities and inquire about the kind of hikes they offer.

Gorilla trekking minimum age

A minimum age of fifteen years is required to participate in the guided gorilla trekking trip. Travelers wishing to see gorillas in the countries of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo must be at least this old. Permits can be obtained from the Wildlife Authority if a parent certifies in writing that their child is physically capable of walking or hiking the distance to and from the gorillas. This is especially true if the child is in good health.

Best time to visit gorillas of Uganda & Rwanda

Ultimate Guide to Gorilla Safaris in Uganda vs. Rwanda.

Gorilla trekking is a year-round activity, but before you plan your trip, you should research when the great apes are most active in the forest. During the dry season (December–February), which includes Mgahinga and Bwindi Forest National Park, guests can see the most mountain gorillas on a Uganda gorilla trip. During the months of June, July, and August through September, the second dry season begins.

Be mindful of the low or off season as well as the wet or rainy season. March, April, May, and October and November are often the months when this happens, as those are when the rainiest parts of the year. One drawback of going gorilla trekking during this season is the likelihood of muddy and difficult trails through the jungle.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is at its most rewarding from February to March. During these months, which are part of the dry season and peak season, you may expect to find ideal weather for hiking gorillas.

The gorilla trekking season in Rwanda, similar to Uganda, begins in the middle of May and continues until the middle of October. The low season begins in December and continues until the middle of March. Midway through March to the middle of May is the low/wet season, and the other half begins in October and continues through November.

Take note that Rwanda has a tropical climate and is, without a doubt, a year-round destination. The lowlands of Rwanda experience an average temperature of 14 degrees Celsius, while the highlands see a record high of 30 degrees Celsius.
