4 Days Rwenzori Trekking to Mutinda Lookout at 3,975 meters. Return via Hunwick’s Pass and Kiharo Camp. Climb skyward towards one of the Rwenzoris most beautiful viewpoints: the Mutinda Lookout at 3,975 metres. A great 4-day hike that works great as a standalone trip or as part of a wider itinerary.
Situated at over 4000m, the Mutinda Lookout provides breathtaking vistas in all directions and extraordinary Afromontane flora, along with the beneficial opportunity to “climb high and sleep low” on the way to Mt. Stanley/Margherita (5109m).
A Complete 4 Days Rwenzori Trekking Itinerary
Day 1
Briefing from the guides and starting the trek, hike to Sine Camp at 2596 meters, the hike will take you through the tall forest trees of the Afro-montane forest zone. This is a steady climb for about 6 kilometers then along a steep climb towards Sine hut. The hike will offer you lots of plant and flower species to view, birds, and a chance of seeing some animal species like Columbus monkeys. Covering 9.5km approximately 5 to 6 hours of walking.
Day 2
Hike to Mutinda Camp at 3688 meters, through the Bamboo and Heather-Rapanea Zone, following the trail while it meanders up and over several small knolls along a ridge top and drops down the side of the valley crossing several small streams and passing close to moss-covered waterfalls with very unique beautiful plant and flower species found above 3000 meters like Giant Heather trees whose trunks are covered in green moss with old man beards (Usnea lichen) hanging from the branches, approaching to Mutinda camp which is set near a small river and waterfall.
In the afternoon one has an option of summiting Mutinda lookout at 3975 meters. Covering 6.1km, approximately 6 to 8 hrs of walking to Mutinda camp.
Day 3
After breakfast, we hike up higher than taking a right turn and climb a bit before descending down through Hunwick’s pass to Kiharo camp at 3,420 meters set in a valley with deep vegetation and towering twin peaks.
Day 4
Descend down downhill past the moss-covered rocks along rivers and beautiful forests back to the basecamp in Kilembe. Covering 14.6km approximately 7 to 9 hours of walking.
